A BAND of showers across the southern Flinders Ranges has brought welcome respite to firefighters battling a large bushfire near Wilmington this afternoon.

While all flanks of the blaze were now contained, the CFS said aircraft and ground crew would monitor the area and remain on high alert, as it would be “many days” before it was completely extinguished.

The fire has scorched more than 8300ha, killing livestock and ruining properties since it broke out at the foot of Horrocks Pass on Wednesday.

Wilmington Hotel manager Lindsay Martin said residents had spent the day nervously watching the weather to see if today’s forecasted north-westerly wind change would see the fire once again threaten the town.

“It was still fairly windy in the morning, but as soon as it started raining it was a great relief,” Mr Martin said.

Two MFS units were on standby at Wilmington to provide cover today and authorities held two meetings at the Town Hall to brief residents on the fire situation.

A BUSHFIRE burning on an island off southeast Queensland has scorched about 160 hectares and is proving difficult to contain.

The fire broke out north of Cowan, on the popular tourist destination Moreton Island, on Wednesday.

Some holiday makers were evacuated and other campsites have been put on notice in case the fire spreads further, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service says.

The town is not under threat.

Attempts to corner the blaze with backburning overnight were unsuccessful.

The service’s spokesman Anthony Contarino says additional emergency crews were on Thursday travelling to the island to help battle the blaze.

“We have monitored the fire continuously overnight and back burning between Cowan Bypass Road and the western flank of the fire is being completed this morning,” Mr Contarino said.

“Our clear priority is to protect life and property.

“We are closely monitoring the fire near campsites on the north west and south of the fire line and will be prepared to relocate campers as a precautionary measure if necessary.”

Mr Contarino said the fire spread about one kilometre south overnight as well as east into the hills and north.

“Approximately 160 hectares have been affected and while we are expecting temperatures to increase today the winds are expected to remain light which will assist our efforts,” he said.

An extremely significant consideration in developing a small business is the consideration to the working circumstances any workforce will be operational in. As well as providing payment for staff, the founders of the company need to remember they have a special duty of care to staff and it is fundamental they pay attention and of course law wise contemplation to their responsibilities.

All employment centres should really perform what are identified as risk assessments, which might not be as frightening as you might believe and are relatively simple processes to accommodate. The consequences of the evaluation ought to assist you recognise what risks are existing in the workplace and of course the items you need to rectify those risks. An easy example from your fire risk assessment might show that you have a specific zone that is accommodating a number of computer work stations. If you explore this risk you will notice that there is of course a fire hazard due to the characteristics of the electrics present. In this case you might need to get the correct fire fighting extinguisher to assist in any initial fire or risk that might start. Exploration into this precise risk will indicate that the right to treat on an electrical fire is a carbon dioxide unit. If you were to make use of a liquid or water extinguishers on such a incident there is massive potential of a severe risk of the operator being electrocuted.

If you are not inclined to want to do the risk review yourself then you may possibly want to employ the expertise of a bespoke health and safety corporation who will have the knowledge and capability to guide you in the best route. They will also offer you the best instruction into what you might want to tackle to offer you and your team the safest working conditions to work in. You may also want to contemplate the local fire station. Many fire officers would be pleased to offer you professional advice in relation to the fire risk assessment segment of your health and safety business plan. They might also present advice on purchasing the correct fire extinguishers for your working environment and they may even recommend to you advice on how to actually use the extinguishers. An important aspect when making an allowance for fire extinguishers is where they need to be positioned, as there are firm guidelines on the positioning of your extinguishers. If you do decide to acquire the extinguishers yourself which of course you can do, make sure you stick to the manufactures guidance on how to set them up. Some extinguishers need to be assembled when they are delivered and the co2 fire extinguishers in particular often need to have the horns fitted. If these are not setup properly then grave injury might occur to the consumer should it be operator in an emergency.

Throughout the world fire safety advice is paramount in the work place but unfortunately something that still often gets neglected. The result of neglecting your fire risk commitments might also lead to devastating situations such as damage to, or even complete loss of property and in the very worst situations loss of life.

If your are responsible for employing staff then you have a duty of care to all those individuals who work for you. Part and parcel of your responsibilities must be to carryout a detailed a fire risk assessment, which involves a close analysis of the entire area where employees are expected to work, in order for you to pickup on every type of potential fire risk. By conducting this fire risk assessment you can then assess exactly what fire fighting equipment you will need to oppose the fire should any incidents ever occur.

Without a shadow of a doubt the most effective method in carrying out a correct fire safety assessment is to get the advice of an expert, in dozens of cases your local fire station can offer professional and expert assistance. Whilst you can conduct these assessments yourself it goes without saying that expert opinion will present you and your employees that extra support that the fire risk assessment will have been completely to a high standard.

When it has been done you can then move onto purchasing the right fire fighting gear to match the needs of your business environment. For instance you shouldn’t let off a water fire extinguisher to cope with a small notebook or electrical fire, the simple reality is that water on electrics will produce even more disaster and of course the risk of electric shock to the employee holding the fire fighting equipment. For this type of occurrence you would need ideally a carbon dioxide fire fighting equipment that has the power to rapidly stop the fire by swiftly reducing the sources core temperature, thus stopping the fire and dropping the potential re-lighting of the fire hazard.

The value of carbon dioxide extinguishers is so formidable in tumbling the core temperature of the target has even seen them being misused in outrageous circumstances such as cooling down cold beverages and bottles of wine and spirits, quite a crazy and inappropriate use of a piece of fire fighting equipment however.

Many types of fire extinguisher exist including carbon dioxide fire extinguishers through to wet chemical fire extinguishers used on hot liquid fires such as cooking fat and petrol fires.

There are numerous models of fire fighting equipment from the wet chemical fire fighting gear to the very fashionable ABE dry powder types of extinguishers. The plus point to the dry powder extinguishers is there ability to deal with most types of fire scenarios however the down side is the destruction they can cause to the backdrop. For example if you used a dry powder fire extinguisher to put out a small office fire started in a waste paper bin, the resulting action would be positive on the small fire nevertheless if you had any electrical workstations in the area such as computers then there is a significant likelihood of the dry powder getting into the internal components of the computer gear thus potentially ruining it.

A large part of the fire risk appraisal should be to put in place the right extinguisher.
